Carbohydrate compositional trends throughout Holocene sediments of an alpine lake (Lake Cadagno)

چکیده

Carbohydrates are a ubiquitous constituent of organisms and contribute significantly to sedimentary organic carbon pools. Yet, the factors that control degradation long-term preservation carbohydrates not well understood. Here, we investigate carbohydrate pool sizes chemical compositions in high-altitude, meromictic Lake Cadagno (Switzerland) over 13,500-year-old succession has recorded past changes from oxic anoxic conditions consists mostly intercalations lacustrine sediments terrestrial-derived sediments. Analyses matter composition by pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) show selectively preserved other constituents time. The products levosugars (potentially cellulose-derived) (alkyl)furans furanones pectin-derived) dominate both terrestrially derived sediment layers, suggesting aquatic sources these compounds. Carbohydrate monomer analyses indicate galactose glucose as dominant monomers no clear differences between terrestrial matter. No impacts redox on were observed. Our study shows major contributor burial indicates effective millennia lake

Holocene Environmental Variability in Southern GreenlandInferred from Lake Sediments

Sediments from Qipisarqo Lake provide a continuous Holocene paleoenvironmental record from southern Greenland. Following deglaciation and glacio-isostatic emergence of the basin from the sea ∼9100 cal yr B.P., proxies of lake paleoproductivity, including biogenic silica and organic matter, increased markedly until 6000 cal yr B.P. and thereafter remained stable over the ensuing warm three mille...

Holocene lake-level trends in the Rocky Mountains, USA

The availability of water shapes life in the western United States, and much of the water in the region originates in the Rocky Mountains. Few studies, however, have explicitly examined the history of water levels in the Rocky Mountains during the Holocene. Here, we examine the past levels of three lakes near the Continental Divide in Montana and Colorado to reconstruct Holocene moisture trends...

A holocene perspective on algal mercury scavenging to sediments of an Arctic lake.

Anthropogenic activities have increased the amount of mercury (Hg) transported atmospherically to the Arctic. At the same time, recent climate warming is altering the limnology of arctic lakes and ponds, including increases in aquatic primary production. It has been hypothesized that climate-driven increases in aquatic production have enhanced Hg scavenging from the water column, and that this ...

Bottom Sediments of Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua, Western Nicaragua

Lakes Nicaragua and Managua are large, rather shallow, fresh-water bodies that lie in a late Tertiary and Quaternary graben in western Nicaragua. The bottom sediments comprise highly organic diatomaceous volcanic silts and clays in which quartz plagioclase feldspar, dioctahedral montmorillonite and volcanic glass are the principal constituents. ' Organic nitrogen content of the lake sediments r...

Palynological study of Lake Kotokel’ bottom sediments (Lake Baikal region)

Pollen and AMSC analyses of bottom sediments from the upper nine meters of the Lake Kotokel’ section were carried out. The regional climate and landscape dynamics during the Late Glacial and Holocene has been reconstructed with an average time resolution of ~120 years. It is shown that the climatic conditions in the Kotokel’ basin during Termination I (~15.5–11 ka) were characterized by short d...
